Our winter schedule includes classes for preschoolers through adults. The Academy’s programs are held in two classrooms, Chrysler Corporation Classroom and Colonial Bank Classroom, on the Plaza Level in the Museum, overlooking Big Spring International Park.

Preschool Classes

Winter Wonderland! Ages 3-5
Celebrate the season of winter by creating wintry masterpieces using paint, pastel, clay, and other materials as seen in the tale – Snowie Rolie by William Joyce.

Learn about texture, value, and shape by working from still life and elements of nature. Lines and shapes are the building blocks for drawing anything the EYE CAN SEE. Media includes graphite, colored pencil, oil and chalk pastel. This class is designed to enhance confidence in drawing.

Learn to paint and draw at the easel. The class will work from direct observation on both still life and portraits, while acquiring a strong foundation in painting techniques. Color mixing, paint application, proportions, and creating a balanced composition will all be covered. Media include oil pastel and acrylic on canvas. Space is limited to 10 students.

Batik
Learn the ancient art of Batik. Batik is a textile art similar to tie-dying. Instead of tying the fabric, wax is applied to resist dyes. The wax can be removed and re-applied several times to make unique and intricate designs. Each student will be able to finish at least two works of art in this class. Materials included. Egg Tempera Painting Techniques
Learn about the favored medium of the early Renaissance painters. Egg tempera is a luminous paint, accenting pure color and fine drawing with glazing qualities of oil paint, yet is water-based, fast drying and optically brilliant. Create an 8”x10” original still life painting on a Claybordä panel. Demonstration of egg yolk and mineral pigment colors included. Materials provided (egg tempera pigments, ClaybordTM, and brushes). Wire & Bead Jewelry
Learn to make handmade clasps, findings, wire wrapped beads, and wire formed beads! Create jewelry pieces such as bracelet, earrings, or hammered style pendant to wear or give as a gift. All levels. Materials included. Space is limited to 10 students.

Watercolors: Seasonal Landscapes
Learn various watercolor techniques—such as wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry—and explore ways to create realistic imagery. Focus on painting landscapes in all seasons. Students will explore seasonal color palettes, sky and foliage colors, and techniques to create textures in landscapes. All levels. Space is limited to 10 students.
