Spring 2012 Museum Academy Schedule of Classes for Children, Teens & Adults

Our spring schedule includes classes for preschoolers through adults. The Academy’s programs are held in two classrooms, Chrysler Corporation Classroom and Colonial Bank Classroom, on the Plaza Level in the Museum, overlooking Big Spring International Park.

All materials are provided for the children’s classes. Pre-registration is required. To register, call 256-535-4350 x222 or Register Online HERE. Space is limited, so REGISTER NOW!

Preschool Classes

Space is limited to 10 students per class.

 

Splish, Splash into Spring! Ages 3-5

Learn about color, line, shape, and texture using clay, collage, and paint. Projects include paintings and sculpture of fish, frogs, rabbits, and turtles. Read such tales as The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and Splash by Ann Jonas. All New Projects!

Alphabets & Animals: Ages 3-5

Explore the sounds, words, and art through the alphabet in this visual art exploration. Media include clay, paint, oil pastel, and collage. We’ll take a look at Alphabets Are Amazing Animals by Anushka Ravishankar and Christiane Pieper.

BIG & small: Mixed Media, Ages 3-5

Create sculptures, drawings, and paintings that express huge and tiny spaces. Subject matter includes animals, flowers, bugs, and landscapes as seen in the tale George Shrinks by William Joyce.

Explore & Create: SPRING! Ages 3-5

Budding artists learn about color, line, shape, and texture using clay, collage, and paint. Create artful paintings and drawings of butterflies, ladybugs, flowers, birds and more. Be inspired by It’s Spring by Linda Glaser and Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert.

After School Classes for Children

Whimsy Art in 3-D! Grades K-4

Create 3-D whimsical artwork of contraptions, kinetic art, do-hickeys and thing-a-ma-bobs. This fun class will teach students’ basic mechanical principles, safe use of tools, and above all inventiveness. Media include paper, clay, paint, wire, wood and more.

Mixed Media: Ages 10-14

Experiment with various art media to explore the possibilities of full expression in mixed media, drawing and painting as well as collage. Learn about color, composition and principles of painting and drawing along with learning how to see with an artist’s eye. Media include marker, pastel, acrylic on canvas, watercolor, and more.

Drawing & Painting: Grades K-4

Students explore drawing and painting tools as they learn about line, shape, form, composition and perspective through a variety of techniques. Media include graphite, pastel, watercolor, and tempera.

Create a variety of clay vessels and sculptures. We’ll glaze our pieces, too!

Learn handbuilding techniques––coil and slab construction, and glazing methods. Wheel throwing techniques introduced. All levels. Space is limited to 8 students. All New Projects!

Inspired by the works in the Connections: Marilyn Murphy & Robert Trotman exhibition, create a figurative character using Scratch-Art® scratchboard.

This art program introduces sculpture media (air-dry clay, papier-mâché, wire, wood and other materials), techniques, and subject matter into the homeschool curriculum. All levels. Space is limited to 15 students per class.

Introduction to Printmaking – Got Ink?

Learn how to carve and print linoleum blocks with relief carving tools. Create an original work of art. Lots of fun-filled demonstrations! Materials included. All levels. Space is limited to 10 students.

Creative Jewelry Making

Learn basic techniques for combining wire, chain and beads to create earrings, necklaces and bracelets with glass beads. Discover stringing, wire wrapping, making ear wires and design styles. Create professional quality jewelry to give as gifts or keep for yourself! All levels. Materials included. Space is limited to 10 students.

Seeing the Landscape Through a Painter’s Eye

Discover creative ways to portray natural and manmade environments using traditional oil painting techniques. Learn about composition, design, color and value choices, light patterns and atmospheric perspective for a sense of distance in the landscape. Explore color mixing and the palette. Capture the essence of the photograph used as reference. All levels. Space is limited to 10 students.

Acrylic & Oil Painting Techniques

Learn more about color, composition and finding your own style by translating a personal photo or photographs into paintings. Each student gets personal attention from the instructor helping them with drawing, painting and turning their photographs into works of art. All levels. Choose either acrylic or oil. Space is limited to 10 students.

Stained Glass Sun Catchers

Learn about glass-cutting, pattern-making, copper-foiling, soldering, and construction. Discover the beauty of stained glass in this one-day workshop. Create spring-inspired sun catchers. Materials included. All levels. Space is limited to 8 students.

Old Masters Painting Techniques

Do you wonder about the work of artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rubens? Learn about the oil painting techniques used by the old masters in canvas preparation. Create a sketch on the canvas by under painting first in an umber wash. Then add in a grisaille layer of grey tones from black to white. Final paintings will include color over the grisaille layer. All levels. Space is limited to 10 students.

Ceramics: Altering Wheel Thrown Forms

A class for wheel-throwers who want to work outside of the circle, this class will teach methods of manipulating and altering wet or leather hard clay. Demonstrations will cover a variety of functional forms. Prior wheel throwing experience is helpful. Materials included. Space is limited to 8 students.

Watercolor

Learn various watercolor techniques—such as wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry—and explore ways to create abstract or realistic imagery.  Subject matter includes elements of landscape and close-up still life. For beginners and experienced students. Space is limited to 10 students.

Art to Wear: Felting a Flower from Wool Fibers

April showers, bring spring flowers! Learn the unique techniques of wet and needle felting. You will be provided with a colorful scarf for you to pin your created flower onto to take home. Materials included. All levels. Space is limited to 12 students.

Stained Glass Jewelry Box

Students design and create a stained glass jewelry box. In the class, glass will be cut, fitted, copper foiled, soldered, and finished to create at 4”x4” top-hinged box. Materials included. All levels. Space is limited to 6 students.

Pastels: Paint a Pet Portrait

Learn to paint your favorite animal from photos. Explore a variety of pastel techniques for creating a successful portrait. Begin by selecting your own reference photos, transferring the image and complete your pet portrait. Materials included. All levels. Space is limited to 10 students.
