Red Clay Survey 2012: Contemporary Southern Art

May 20 – September 16, 2012

Overview

The Red Clay Survey is a major recurring regional competition sponsored by the Huntsville Museum of Art. The exhibition “takes the pulse” of contemporary Southern art every three years through a selection of work in all styles and media determined by jurors with strong national credentials. The exhibition recognizes and encourages excellence, and provides a permanent record of the development of regional art through the publication of a comprehensive, award winning catalogue. The Red Clay jurors have the option to select up to three works per artist for inclusion in the show. Works selected for the exhibition will be displayed in five galleries in the Museum’s elegant facility, located in Big Spring International Park in Downtown Huntsville.

IMPORTANT

The Red Clay Survey will be juried in two stages. The first stage consists of a review of images. Artists accepted into the first stage will be invited to ship or hand-deliver their work to the Museum for a second stage, on-site review. Works accepted into the second stage of jurying will be exhibited in The Red Clay Survey.

CATALOGUE

The Huntsville Museum of Art will publish a full-color documentary catalogue of the exhibition as an e-book. The catalogue will illustrate one work by every artist included in the show, accompanied by artist biographies.

ABOUT YOUR IMAGES

It is very important that your images represent your work as accurately and professionally as possible.
The Huntsville Museum of Art reserves the right to reproduce images of accepted entries in the catalogue and for promotion of the exhibition in the media.

SALES

All work included in The Red Clay Survey will be available for sale unless designated Not for Sale (NFS) by the artist. Prices will be available only upon request, and purchased works will not be released until after the close of the exhibition. The Museum will deduct a 50% commission from each sale made during the exhibition. By the close of the exhibition, the Museum will issue a check for 50% of the purchase price to any artist whose work is sold.

LIABILITY

The Huntsville Museum of Art will insure exhibited works from the time of their safe arrival at the Museum until they are returned to the artist, for the insurance values indicated on the entry form. RED CLAY 2012 JURORS: JANET MONAFO AND PAUL RAHILLY

Janet Monafo

Janet Monafo’s exquisitely rendered pastels have earned her wide recognition and respect from collectors, curators, and artists. A nationally recognized artist with a long list of accolades, she was elected into the Pastel Society of America’s Hall of Fame in 2002, an honor held by William Merritt Chase and Mary Cassatt.

Monafo holds a B.A. from Regis College and studied at Massachusetts College of Art, where she currently teaches drawing in the continuing education department. She has received many awards during her career, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Monafo’s paintings have been displayed in numerous exhibitions, including the National Academy of Design in New York City and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

Paul Rahilly

Paul Rahilly is a leading figure in the field of contemporary American realism. He is equally admired and collected as a painter of figures, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. His work incorporates both realism and abstraction in sophisticated compositions of lusciously applied paint.

After earning his B.A. at Tufts University, Rahilly moved to New York to study at the Art Students League. He earned his M.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art. Since 1966, he has held teaching positions at several institutions, most recently as an instructor in painting and drawing at both the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts College of Art. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions at galleries and museums in Boston, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.
